Excellent Well Built Card Reader Review by STLCardinalFan I purchased the Lexar USB 3.0 reader and discovered that it would not read my 32GB cards. Lexar's tech suport refused to acknowledge the problem or offer any fix, other than to suggest that I needed to update my drivers. My drivers are all fully up to date. Frustrated with Lexar, I read reviews on Amazon and elsewhere for various USB 3.0 card readers, and decided to give the Hoodman a try.

The Hoodman is very well built and has a solid feel. The brushed "steel" finish is pretty cool looking. I plugged the Hoodman in and before inserting a card, I went to their website and downloaded the latest firmware update. I had read on line that some people were experiencing problems with the Hoodman until they found the firmware update. There was nothing in the packaging that came with the reader to warn purchasers that they need to do this.

The firmware update was quick and easy. I then inserted a 32GB CF card and VIOLA! The Hoodman instantly read the card and downloaded all of the files flawlessly - - something I could not get the Lexar to do. The downloads appear to be as fast as I would expect from USB 3.0. The Hoodman handles both CF and SD cards, has a door that covers and protects the internal pins when a CF card is not inserted, and is slim enough to easily fit in a camera bag if you need to travel with your reader. Overall, I am very happy with the Hoodman and would recommend it to anyone looking for a dependable and well built card reader. (Posted on July 24, 2015)

Excellent Reader - Requires Firmware Update for UDMA 7 (takes just a moment) Review by MichaelD Works great, but if you're buying this for UDMA 7 support, make sure to go to their site and download+install the latest firmware. Mine came with firmware only supporting UDMA 6 and I was getting 30~45 megabyte/sec transfers to and from my Lexar 1000X 32 GB CF cards. I downloaded and installed the new firmware (took all of 2 minutes) and I'm now writing to the cards at 90 megabytes/sec and reading at 115~125 megabytes/sec. (Posted on July 24, 2015)

The Best USB 3 Card Reader Review by Raymond W. Smock Since switching to USB 3 to handle large photo files from my Nikon D800, I have had three USB 3 card readers. The first two were slugs that did not live up to advertised transfer rates. The Raw Steel reader is a real tool. It is fast and built like a tank. It holds a card better than some too, with a deep recess that helps protect the expensive Compact Flash and SD cards. It reads all the newer faster UDMA cards with ease. (Posted on July 24, 2015)

No-nonsense - top quality. Review by Firestarter This is my first Hoodman brand product. I bought it after an extensive research that included USB-3 products from my top three brands: SanDisk, Lexar and Sonnet. I eliminated all three brands, as two of them included some negative aspects and the manufacturer of the third one did not provide me with the satisfactory answer to my pre-sale technical question.

There is not much that can be said about a product as simple as a dual (CF/SD) memory card reader. This one is USB-3 / UDMA compliant, includes 3-foot long cable with regular plugs (no mini or micro) on both ends. The CF socket is equipped with a drop-out door that opens automatically when a CF card is inserted. That prevents dirt from getting in and protects delicate contact pins. A card can be inserted as far as about 3/4 of an inch, so there is no worry about bad contact or inaccurate angle of insertion (cards in some other brands of readers can only be inserted by about 1/4 of an inch). The design is rugged and robust, with the aluminum body. Its size is bigger than the size of other brands' comparable products, but I do not care.

I am using this reader with my Retina MacBook Pro. The reader works out-of-the-box with no problem whatsoever. I have no way of checking the exact speed of read/write, but the gain in speed over my old USB-2 and FireWire readers is significant. I just downloaded a firmware update from HoodmanUSA.com and it should give me even more speed with my future faster cards.

So, for now, total satisfaction. I am adding Hoodman to my private list of top manufacturers in this category. I highly recommend the Hoodman RAW USB-3 dual card reader. (Posted on July 24, 2015)
